What is CranioSacral Therapy,
And how it works?
"CranioSacral Therapy is subtle in its approach yet
powerful in its effectiveness."
D.A., Key West,
The root of CranioSacral Therapy is
in the traditional branches of medicine like osteopathy and was developed by
Dr. John Upledger from the Upledger Institute in Florida.
CranioSacral
Therapy is a gentle, non invasive hands-on method of enhancing the
functioning of every system in the body,as well as facilitating the harmonious
coordination of body, mind and soul. At the center of the system
stays the CranioSacral System, which is a coherent
physiological system that is concerned with the production, and reabsorption of
cerebrospinal fluid ( that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord).
The cerebrospinal fluid is secreted by the brain and provides a
fluid environment for the brain and the nervous system. This fluid has a very
subtle rhythmical motion (beating in a range of 6-12 cycles per minute).
CranioSacral Rhythm is so stable that variations outside of this range are
used by the CranioSacral Therapist as indications of pathology. By
restricting the range of motion and the amplitude of the CranioSacral
Rhythm the whole body is affected.
The CranioSacral System is intimately related to,influences,
and it is influenced by the Nervous System, Musculoskeletalry System,
Endocrine System, Lymphatic System, Vascular System, the Respiratory System,
and the Immune System.
The corrective actions are non-intrusive and indirect methods, which encourage
our own natural healing mechanism to dissipate the negative effects of stress
on our Central Nervous System.
The treatment is beneficial for both adults and children and even for
newborns. CranioSacral Therapy done to a newborn in the delivery
room or within the first days of life could potentially reduce a wide variety
of difficulties which cannot be discovered until the child is in school ( see
the page for Children for more details).
How is CranioSacral Therapy Performed?
A CranioSacral
Therapy session consists of the client being lying supine comfortably (fully
clothed) on a massage table facing up. What follows is a set of
multiple very gentle palpations weighting no more than 5 grams (the weight of a
penny) in various points on the body , in order to identify and correct the
problems. The whole session takes usually 1 hour and is a very gentle and
relaxing experience.
